Our first stop was to Obidos, a tiny medieval city whose castle sits on top of the hill. It was very windy so we didn't chance walking along the top of the castle walls. It is known for the marriage of King Afonso to his cousin Isabella when they were both still children 9 and 10 in the 14th century.
Today the castle has been turned into a hotel and the little town has made the appertif, Ginja, made with cherries, a favorite seller. It was very tasty with chocolate.
Our second stop was a city on the coast called Nazare. A tiny fishing village now known from some of the best surfing in the world. It holds one of the records for largest surfed waves. In the summer the small town swells in size, and the beaches which were empty on our visit, are supposedly packed. The women here are known for a special skirt which has seven layers (not sure the background on this tradition). The town also has some beautiful tiles.
Our last stop before Porto was in Aveiro. A picturisc small town, with canels and small boats. The nuns here made a dessert very famous made out of egg yolk and sugar (as the whites were used to make the sacrament).
